Volunteering at Skiff Medical Center
Skiff Medical Center is fortunate to have scores of dedicated volunteers who volunteer their time, talent or resources to help the hospital. Volunteers may work from just a few hours a month to several days or evenings a week, depending on their availability.
Skiff Auxiliary
The hospital's Auxiliary offers many opportunities for service. Some volunteers work directly with patients, while some choose to work behind the scenes. Some bring their specially screened dogs to provide animal-assisted therapy. The Ambassador volunteers enjoy greeting patients at the front door and answering questions from the public. Still others prefer clerical duties and spend their time answering phones or scheduling patients. Volunteers also assist in fundraising by staffing the Skiff Auxiliary Gift Shop, or helping with the Chair-ries Jubilee event. They also assist with blood drives, health fairs, addressing and mailing. Learn more by visiting our Auxiliary Web page.
If this kind of volunteer service appeals to you, please contact Debby Pence of the Skiff Auxiliary at (641) 792-6635. Or you may email her at dpence@pencereese.com.
Hospice of Jasper County
Another special way to serve is through Hospice of Jasper County. Some volunteers are trained to work one-on-one with terminally ill patients and family members. Others would rather help with mailings, writing thank-you cards to donors, or other administrative tasks.
To learn more about volunteering for hospice, please contact Kathy Trotter at (641) 787-3074 or ktrotter@skiffmed.com.
Jasper County Ride
Do you like to help people in need? Become a volunteer driver for Jasper County Ride, a service of Skiff Medical Center. Volunteer drivers provide rides to the doctor's office, pharmacy or grocery store to Jasper County residents who are older than 65, or disabled, or low income. Most rides occur within Jasper County, but a few clients need to go to Des Moines, Iowa City or Marshalltown. Becoming a volunteer driver is easy, enjoyable and rewarding. And best of all, it helps someone who needs it.
If you'd like to be a volunteer driver or learn more, please call Judy Peterson at (641) 787-3133, or send her an e-mail at jpeterson@skiffmed.com.
Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP)
Volunteers for SHIIP provide free, unbiased counseling for Jasper County residents who receive Medicare or Medicaid coverage. They meet one-on-one with clients, helping them make decisions about their coverage. SHIIP volunteers have helped hundreds of Medicare recipients choose an approprite Medicare Prescription Drug Plan.
